How to measure your pond
A few minutes with a tape measure is all it takes. Measure in metres, feet, or feet and inches — whichever's easiest for you. The calculator converts everything automatically.
- 1Measure the overall length and width of the pond at its widest points, in metres.
- 2Measure the depth from the top edge to the deepest point of the base.
- 3For L-shapes or ponds with shelves, measure the main body first — we'll add extra allowance automatically.
- 4Round up rather than down. It's easier to have a little spare material than to run short mid-lay-up.
Which surface are you fibreglassing?
Your substrate changes what prep products you need. Here's the short version — the calculator gives you the specifics for your project.
Concrete, blockwork or rendered walls
Porous masonry surfaces need sealing before you laminate. We recommend BondX GRP Primer and a slightly heavier first resin coat.
Plywood
Timber moves and joints can telegraph through the laminate. A tissue layer over joints and screw heads gives a smoother result.
Existing fibreglass (repair)
Key the surface by abrading the old gelcoat so the new resin can bond. Primer usually isn't needed on sound GRP.

Common questions
How accurate is the calculator?
It gives a solid working estimate for straightforward shapes. Shelves, steps, returns and tight internal corners all use more material than the flat-surface maths accounts for.
What if my pond is between two kit sizes?
We round up to the next kit size so you don't run short. If you're close to the boundary, send us your dimensions and we'll double check.
Do I need a primer?
Usually yes for masonry, blockwork and plywood. Not usually needed on sound existing fibreglass. The calculator flags this based on your surface answer.
Can I fibreglass over an old, cracked pond?
